Embellished: New Johnny Was Dresses

Just in time for the holidays! Two delightful new dresses from JWLA have arrived at Helena's.

The Selma dress in bright aqua is the antidepressant of all dresses. So fun and cheerful with vivid zigzag embroidery at the cuffs and flowers gracing the sides and shoulder. The knot twist front is super flattering and we find this shape works well even for maternity.

The Raquel dress in black is simply stunning, with a dramatic cascade of embroidered flowers in bright pinks, blues and yellows.

What we love about JWLA dresses is the soft knit fabric that creates a dress that is incredibly versatile as well as being just downright gorgeous. Easy to dress up for those holiday gatherings, but comfortable enough to be worn everyday.

Holiday Dressing Made Easy: Sweet Pea

You have enough things to worry about over the Holidays. Putting together that great party outfit should not be one of them. The staff at Helena's have lots of great ideas to make your season a little less stressful. We have just set up a rack especially for the holidays with some of our most festive styles.Like these wonderful new pieces from Sweet Pea. And they are so easy and versatile that they make dressing up a cinch. I am a huge fan of the long sleeve v neck belted top in blue and black. This is a great piece to dress up a simple black skirt or pants, the striking pattern is bold but elegant and creates a fantastic backdrop for a statement necklace like the crystal encrusted ribbon bib from Zad.

If you like a little naughty with your nice then the ruffle front tank in black and grey python print is just the ticket. We have paired it with this great high-waisted black pencil skirt from Only Hearts to give it that sexy vintage bombshell feel.

We love the versatility of separates but there is always room in our closets for one more awesome dress. The sleeveless v neck dress is a symphony of delicious pinks, plums and oranges. Fun and festive, you can pair it with a long shirt underneath, or throw a cardigan or wrap over it.

So, as you know, we like color. We like colorful dresses, tops, shoes, and of course, bags. As we have often told customers, if you love yellow, but it's not exactly your best color...carry a great yellow handbag. These velvet clutches are perfect for a winter party or a sweet night out with the girls.

Come take a stroll down Franklin Street and see our festive holiday window dressing. Jessica & Jenn pulled all of our favorite dresses and coats in turquoise, soft blue, black and cream. The clothes appear, as they are, cozy and chic. It's a vision.

New Orla Kiely

Our holiday order of Orla Kiely has just landed here at Helena's. This might be my favorite stem variation yet. The Shiny Multi Scribble Stem print combines colors like only Orla can do, with poppy citrusy orange, yellow and limes, tempered with the more sober charcoal, brown and ochre all on an off white background. We have the scribble stem in the classic shoulder bag and big zip wallet (pic above is the sling shape). I have a feeling these won't be around very long...they are already flying off the shelves.

Testament Tops for the Holidays!

We love the designs from Testament! Their signature style is a softly draped look with pretty detail at the sleeve and neckline. And Testament loves deep colors and subtle print. We have leafy print top (far left) in a dark wine print. And we have the paisley print top (closer left) in black. Paired with dark jeans, or a black skirt, both tops are perfect for a holiday get together.

j-41 Jasper arrives!

Our love with j-41 began with the Journey clog, and has evolved to the entire collection of boots and shoes. The Jasper is a classic j-41 design, with lined perforated leather, in black nubuck. The strap is adjustable, and as always, they are super comfortable and wearable. And also versatile...these shoes look fantastic with everything!

Another new maternity line we love is Everly Grey! This line's signature designs feature beautiful floral prints in eye-catching saturated colors. This Isabel tunic in bittersweet chocolate just arrived. It has a sophisticated look, with an easy effortless fit. Great to shop in Arlington!

Oh, how we love our home in Arlington! Just down the street from us in East Arlington is the gallery shop Tall Tree Guild. They are known for their impressive, clean styled, handmade furniture. But what I really love is all the side-dishes. The pottery, the hand-knit mittens, throw pillows, and the tiles. It is a fantastic collection of well-priced handmade goods. My favorites: the charming colorfully glazed miniatures pots (at $8.50 each), and the children's tea set, complete with cream pitcher and sugar bowl.

The Holidays are upon us. Here at Helena's we have some great new maternity pieces to make dressing your ever changing pregnant body a little easier.

Speaking of easy, Noppies Seidel pants are back in the house! This stretchy high paneled pant is one of our best selling maternity pants ever. A long lean bootleg, and generous top make these pants extremely comfortable (another serving of pecan pie please!). This is a great pant for work or dressing up. I tried a pair on yesterday and couldn't believe how well they fit.

Pretty Palette : Purple, Aqua, and Greys

Kensie's winter palette is just plain lovely this season with a bevy of soft pastels and mouth watering candy colors. The Icelandic Sweater is a real winner, oversized with a high collar and big big buttons, the soft grey, lilac and aqua patterning make this the perfect sweater for cuddling up in. For something a little jazzier, Kensie also has this super cute tie dye tank. Flirty and filmy this is a great piece to dress up for a holiday party or night on the town. The striations of jewel tone colors create a beautiful sunset-like effect. This is tie dye done right! Of course, you need to accessorize and we have a slew of bags to choose from. We are anxiously awaiting our November order of Prairie Underground and just got word that it should be arriving this Friday, Nov. 13th. Here is a little taste of some of the items we will be receiving. The fabulous Falcon dress, which has almost sold out in the blue, is coming in this beautiful muted rose color, and is sure to be a hit. For those of you who love the short hoodie, we will be getting it in Slate, above, and also in Lipstick. No Prairie order is complete without the ever popular long cloak hoodie. Is it really November 9th already?

This fall is flying by. Here at Helena's we have been busy bees, stocking the shop with all sorts of fantastic finds for the the season. There are so many wonderful things that choosing just three was tough. Customers always remark that it must be dangerous to work here, and indeed it is. My paycheck is in constant peril!

Here are a few things that are tempting me right now.

1. Orla Kiely Large Tote Bag in Cutlery Print- My goodness! I love, love, love this bag. The large scale is great. I always find myself carting around way more stuff in the fall/winter....hats, gloves, a change of shoes for snowy days. You can fit it all in here. But of course, it's that print that really gets me, black background with white overlap cutlery outlines...Who else but Orla can create a bag with spoons and forks on it and have it look so chic?

2+3. Ripe Discs Tunic and Maternal America Dark Wash 5 Pocket Maternity Jean- I have always loved and shopped our maternity section. Now that I am actually pregnant it gives me all the more reason to indulge in some of these stylish pieces. The discs tunic from Ripe makes me very happy. I love the elegant line, it has coverage but I don't feel swamped in fabric. The fit is really great, and the bold print helps distract from some of that early pregnancy lumpage and bumpage.

Great jeans are hard to find when you are not pregnant, and even harder when you are. The Maternal America 5 Pocket Jeans are some of the most comfortable jeans I have ever worn.They have a nice wide band that is super comfortable and secure. The dark wash and long lean leg are very flattering. My OB nurse even complimented me on them at my last appointment!
